Men's Soccer Shines in 3-1 Victory Over Detroit Mercy

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men's soccer team defended its home field on Saturday night against visiting Detroit Mercy, as the squad put forth a strong effort on both sides of the field to defeat the Titans, 3-1, and move to 2-0 in league play. The last time the Phoenix (3-1-2) opened league play with back-to-back wins was in 2007.

"It was a difficult first half for us," head coach Jeremy Bonomo said.  "Detroit plays a unique style. Fortunately, we were able to restore our brand of soccer and get the result. An extremely hard-fought game for our guys."

Detroit Mercy (4-1-1) entered the matchup undefeated and ranked No. 9 in the most recent Great Lakes regional rankings, having been included in the rankings for three-straight weeks. The Phoenix did not back down from the challenge, however, striking in the 10th minute when Jepson scored his league-leading fifth goal of the season.

The match proved to be very physical, with a total of 30 fouls called and four yellow cards distributed.

The Titans held an advantage in shots 21-9, but were not near as accurate with their attempts, as Green Bay owned a 9-7 edge in shots on goal. Both squads were awarded three corner kicks apiece.

GOAL SUMMARY
10' | GB | Audi Jepson (Assist: Karim Lauba): Lauba won a battle for the ball at the top of the box and moved it to Jepson on the left side, who was then able to redirect and beat the charging keeper for his fifth goal of the season.

25' | UDM | Dalton Amez (Unassisted): After a deflection at the top of the box, Amez recovered the ball and beat Kahvedzic left to knot the game at one-all.

81' | GB | Tomer Zloczower (Assist: Audi Jepson, Cody Newton): Jepson pushed the ball from midfield up to Newton charging down the right side, who sent a perfect cross to the foot of Zloczower on the far side of the net for the game-winning goal.

89' | GB | Brady Lenius (Unassisted): Lenius was able to break through the Titans' backline and work towards the left side of the goal, giving the keeper no chance to stop his shot opposite net.
