GREEN BAY, Wis – The Green Bay volleyball team wrapped up its nonconference season on Saturday at the Kress Center, falling in straight sets to Cal Poly in the final match of the 2017 Green Bay Country Inn & Suites Classic. The Phoenix (4-7) finish nonconference play with a 4-7 record, but more importantly used it to challenge itself like never before.
With the Horizon League season starting next weekend, Green Bay will enter play with a seven-game losing streak, with all seven defeats coming to teams ranked in the Top 25 or with impressive volleyball pedigree. The two teams that the Phoenix was defeated by this weekend, currently boast a combined 25-4 record, and Cal Poly will most certainly be ranked in the AVCA Top 25 poll next week.
The Mustangs won 25-15, 25-17 and 25-19 to finish the weekend at a perfect 3-0. Torrey Van Winden was name Tournament MVP, while Taylor Nelson and Adlee Van Winden were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Green Bay's
Lydia DeWeese represented the Phoenix on the All-Tournament Team, finishing with seven kills against Cal Poly.
Roberta Todd led th team with eight kills, while
Taylor Totka added six. Maddie Yoss controlled the offense with 28 assists, while libero
Vanessa Buman registered 11 digs.
Cal Poly finished with 44 kills in the match, led by A. Van Winden's 13. Green Bay hit just .161, thanks to a strong line of defense at the net for the Mustangs.
Green Bay, which was predicted second in the Horizon League, will open league play on Friday, Sept. 22 against Oakland at the Kress Center. First serve is set for 6 p.m. Youngstown State visits the Kress Center the day after, which will get started at 4 p.m.
