Volleyball Opens League Play with 3-1 Home Win Over Oakland

GREEN BAY, Wis – The Green Bay volleyball team began Horizon League play on the winning side of the net on Friday night, downing visiting Oakland 3-1 at the Kress Center. The Phoenix (5-7, 1-0 HL) snapped its recent losing skid, but more importantly begins Horizon League action with a 1-0 record for the fourth time in five seasons.

The Phoenix looked like it was going to cruise to an easy fourth set win when it led 17-10, but the Golden Grizzlies (5-8, 0-1 HL) promptly responded with a 9-0 run to take a 19-17 lead in search of forcing a fifth set. A Taylor Wolf kill, who finished with a team-high 17 in the match, ended the run. The match eventually became tied at 25-25, before Wolf came through again with a big spike to give her team the 26-25 lead. An attack that sailed out of bounds by Oakland then gave Green Bay its first home win of the season.

After Oakland evened things up with a 27-25 second set victory, Green Bay responded on its home court with a strong 25-17 third set win. The Phoenix controlled the match from start to finish, and it was T. Wolf again who recorded the winning point on another nice set up from Maddie Yoss, who totaled a match-high 52 assists. Yoss also added four kills and 15 digs, recording her third double-double of the season.

Jessica Wolf was in attacking form at the net all evening, racking up 41 swings and connecting for 14 kills. DeWeese was her usual self, finishing with 13 kills and a block.

Vanessa Buman anchored the Green Bay back defense, recording 22 digs and three assists. Emily Lautenschlager and Austyn Everingham combined for 11 digs and three assists as well.

Green Bay won the opening set 25-21, after trailing 19-17 late. Leading 21-20 after Oakland stopped the run, the Phoenix won four of the final five points to secure the opening set win after Lydia DeWeese smashed one home.

The Phoenix will look to make it 2-0 in the Horizon League tomorrow afternoon when it faces Youngstown State at 4 p.m. at the Kress Center. The Penguins (7-8, 0-1 HL) fell 3-0 at UIC on Friday night.
