GREEN BAY, Wis – The Green Bay volleyball team needed a dramatic second set on Friday night at the Kress Center, before cruising past in-state rival Milwaukee in straight sets to secure its second-straight 3-0 start in the Horizon League. The Phoenix (7-7, 3-0 HL) won its fifth-straight match over the Panthers (8-9, 1-2 HL) and its fourth 3-0 win over those five, thanks to a season-high .346 hitting percentage.
After Green Bay won the opening set 25-22 with a set-winning kill by
Taylor Totka, Green Bay appeared to be ready to go up 2-0 quickly when it found itself leading 24-21 late in the set. The visiting Panthers then rallied off three points in a row to tie the match at 24-24. The two teams exchanged blows before
Taylor Wolf notched three kills after her team trailed 26-25, helping the Phoenix win four of the final five points and secure the 29-27 victory.
The Phoenix started fast in the third set, in search of back to back 3-0 wins in League play following last Saturday's victory over YSU. Green Bay went on runs of four, five and six in the set, before eventually blowing the third set open and winning 25-13.
Jessica Wolf finished off Milwaukee, tallying six kills in the final set.
The .346 hitting percentage by Green Bay is the highest mark this season, passing the previous high of .340 against New Hampshire on Sept. 1.
Lydia DeWeese led the Phoenix with 16 kills, her highest total since her 20-kill effort against Butler back on Sept. 2. DeWeese hit .444, her highest hitting percentage over the first three in league, and also set a new season-high in blocks with seven.
Sophomore Maddie Yoss picked up her fourth double-double of the season, finishing with 42 assists and 11 digs.
Vanessa Buman led GB with 13 digs.
The Phoenix will be in action again tomorrow afternoon, when it welcomes UIC who was off on Friday and will come to the Kress Center with fresh legs.
