Green Bay Grinds Out 65-56 Victory Over YSU at Home

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- Redshirt freshman Karly Murphy paced No. 25/24 Green Bay with 14 points and seven rebounds on Thursday night as the Phoenix improved to 13-2 on the season and 3-1 in Horizon League play with a 65-56 victory over Youngstown State at home.
 
Green Bay allowed the Penguins just nine points in the opening quarter of play, carrying a 14-9 lead into the second period of action after forcing YSU to go 4-11 from the field to open the game.
 
Youngstown State started out hot in the second and began to chip away at the deficit, outscoring Green Bay 13-12 to trail by just four points, 26-22, at halftime.
 
From the end of the second quarter to the 2:27 mark in the third, the Phoenix pieced together an 18-0 run and held the Penguins off the board for a total of nine minutes, 27 seconds. YSU managed to score just eight points in the third quarter, marking the 22nd time this season Green Bay held an opponent to single-digit scoring in a single quarter and the seventh in league play.
 
Green Bay struggled from the line in the fourth, going just 9-16 to round out a 15-for-30 performance in the game, but made plays down the stretch to secure a 65-56 victory at home.
 
The Phoenix owned a 28-10 advantage in points in the paint, remaining perfect in that category through 15 games. The nine turnovers surrendered by Green Bay tied the season low set last Saturday against Milwaukee and led to a 20-11 edge in points off turnovers.
 
Jessica Lindstrom tallied her eighth rebound of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds in 34 minutes. Allie LeClaire joined Murphy and Lindstrom in double figures with 10 points in 36 minutes.
 
Green Bay will return to the court on Saturday when the squad welcomes Cleveland State to the Kress Center for a 1 p.m. tipoff.
