Team Notes
MILWAUKEE MOTIVATOR
Sandy Cohen III (29 points) and Kameron Hankerson (24 points) each scored career-highs on Monday night against in-state rival Milwaukee, with Khalil Small scoring 22 points of his own in Green Bay's 99-92 dramatic overtime victory at the Resch Center. The Phoenix (8-13, 3-5 HL) and Panthers (9-11, 2-5 HL) were tied at 92-92 in the overtime period, before Hankerson buried a transition 3-pointer with 38 seconds left to give the Phoenix the lead for good.
Cohen III scored 17 of his career-high 29 points in the first half, shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and 6-for-6 at the free throw line. The redshirt-junior also notched his second career double-double this season, finishing with 10 rebounds in 42 minutes. It marked the fifth-straight win by Green Bay in the series against the Panthers.
MAKING A MONTH
Green Bay will not leave the city in the month of January, and history shows that's a good thing. Over the last six seasons, including this year, the Phoenix has gone 20-3 at home in the month of January. One of those three losses came earlier this season against IUPUI, but GB bounced back on Monday night to beat Milwaukee. There are still four games left on the January schedule for GB, which means they will play six home games total in the month combined, the most home games in a month in the program's Horizon League history.
SHOULDERING THE LOAD
Khalil Small and Sandy Cohen III both rank in the top 7 of Horizon League scorers this season, with Small sitting second at 19.6 PPG and Cohen ranking 7th with 17.4 PPG. Together, the two account for over 47 percent of the team's scoring in HL play through 8 games. They rank first and second on the team in rebounding, first and second on the team in minutes and are both shooting 46 percent or better from the field.
COHEN'S COMEBACK
After scoring a season-low two points at IUPUIÂ last Friday night, Sandy Cohen III bounced back in a big way by scoring a career-high 29 points in his team's overtime win against Milwaukee. Cohen III is averaging 17.4 PPG in Horizon League play, which ranks seventh in the HL, and has scored double-figures in 8 of his 10 games this season.Â
ON THE GRIND
Green Bay has already played 8 Horizon League games, the most of any team in the conference. Off to a 3-5 start, GB is tight on practice and preparation time, and has played the most amount of games of any Horizon League team. GB virtually plays every other day, having played 5 games over just a 10-day span to open Horizon League play, and played three more games following that over a 6-day span. The Phoenix will play 10 games in the month of January alone and will play only one home game over its last six games and only once in the month of February.
KAMMING ALIVE
Sophomore Kameron Hankerson racked up a career-high 24 points on Monday night, a game after scoring 16 points at IUPUI. In his last two games, coming off the bench, Hankerson is averaging 20.0 PPG, 2.5 made 3s per game and just over 34 minutes per game. The Novi native has scored his most points in a two-game stretch over the year and a half collegiate career, while knocking down the game-winning 3-pointer against the Panthers.
KING KHALIL
After scoring a season-low seven points at IUPUI last Friday, Khalil Small got back to his high-scoring ways with a 22-point effort against Milwaukee. The senior leader has now scored 21 points or more in four of his last five games, and is averaging 21.4 PPG over that stretch. Small has scored 20-plus points in 6 games this season, after only recording 3 such games over his first three seasons with the Phoenix. The Chicago-native also leads the team in rebounding with 7.4 RPG in Horizon League play, and has a knack for crashing the offensive boards. Small has recorded multiple offensive rebounds in 15 games this season and leads the team in that category, nearly averaging three offensive rebounds a game in Horizon League play.
1,000 POINTS IS NOT SMALL
Khalil Small notched his 1,000th career point on Jan. 4, becoming just the 28th player in program history to reach that milestone. He has scored in double-figures in 20 of 21 games this year, the most double-figure scoring games by any HL player this season. Below is where Small ranks all-time in career scoring at UWGB:
20.         Mike King (1999-2004) – 1,154
21.         Tom Brown (1981-85) – 1,149
22.         Jerry Carstensen (1996-00) – 1,137
23.         Jordan Fouse (2012-16) – 1,136
24.         Terry Evans (2004-09) – 1,099Â
25.         Khalil Small (2014-18) - 1,096
26.         Dean Vander Plas (1987-91) – 1,050
27.         Tom Jones (1972-74) – 1,038
28.         James Bardney (1970-74) – 1,030
PATTERSON POWER
Even though he battled foul trouble all night and was able to log just 19 minutes, freshman Manny Patterson scored a career-high 14 points at IUPUI on Friday night. The Chicago-native shot an efficient 5-for-7 from the field and 4-for-5 from the free throw line, while finishing two rebounds shy of a double-double. Patterson followed that performance by grabbing a career-high 14 rebounds in the victory over Milwaukee on Monday night.
