Green Bay Volleyball Reaches Best Conference Start in Program History, Takes Out Norse 3-1

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- Green Bay volleyball (14-8, 9-1 HL) were out for revenge this afternoon and came away successful, taking down the Northern Kentucky Norse (13-7, 5-5 HL) in four sets. The Phoenix were elevated to 9-1 in the league, setting a new best conference start in program history.

"We've been able to focus on the present," said head coach Abbey Sutherland. "We talk about one match a time, one point at a time, and we're enjoying this ride. Now that we're winning, it can get stressful, but we're enjoying one another and taking these challenges as opportunities to get better."

"I also want to thank the fans that came out this weekend, especially on Alzheimer's Awareness Night," she added. "Friday was a success, and we raised over $6,000 for a great cause."

Green Bay 3, Northern Kentucky 1
The Phoenix started off the match at ease despite going back-and-forth their opponents. After tying at 11 points each, freshman Alexandra Zakutney turned the tide, striking a kill and putting up the first block solo of the afternoon. In set one, Green Bay executed three of their five aces throughout the match, while the Norse were unable to catch the home team off guard even once.

Set two was the roughest of the four, as Northern Kentucky was able to pull ahead in the middle of the game and hold on notwithstanding a 5-2 Phoenix run at the end.

Set three looked to be similar – Green Bay was down at 17-10. However, they went on a 7-0 scoring run to tie the game at 17, helped by sophomore Ashley Sledge, who tallied a block assist with junior Maddie Yoss as well as three hammers of her own.

If the fire was re-lit in set three, it was ablaze in the fourth. The Phoenix jumped to a seven-point lead in the first seven plays of the game, forcing the Norse to use both timeouts during that time. From there, Northern Kentucky couldn't recover nor stop Green Bay's momentum, and were held to a lowly .087 hitting percentage.

It was Sledge's day as she led the team in points, kills, and blocks, with 17, 14, and six, respectively. Yoss helped out with four blocks and a clip of .500, right ahead of a consistent Sledge's .433. Senior Jessica Wolf was firing down heavy shots all evening as well, taking 44 attempts and landing 13 of them. Defensively, seniors Vanessa Buman and Austyn Everingham both reached double-digits: Buman stopped 33 attacks while Everingham notched a season-high 21.

Next Game
The Phoenix will go on the road next weekend, traveling to Youngstown State on Friday, October 26 and Cleveland State on Saturday the 27th. It will be the last full-weekend road match of the regular season for Green Bay.
