Green Bay Volleyball Takes Their Win Streak to Double-Digits, Sweeps YSU 3-0

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The Green Bay Phoenix volleyball team (15-8, 10-1 HL) extended their win streak to ten in a row this evening, taking down the Youngstown State Penguins (7-17, 1-10 HL) for the second time this season. This double-digit win number is even more impressive considering the fact that last season GB collected nine wins throughout conference play.

The Phoenix pulled off this win due to a better combination of accuracy and efficiency: their final overall clip was .274 compared to the Penguins' .202. YSU were nearly even with Green Bay in terms of attack attempts, but the Phoenix took home a critical 16 more successful kills than their opponents. They were helped by sophomore Ashley Sledge (.389) and junior Maddie Yoss (.455). Both players rank in the top ten for hitting percentage in the Horizon League, with Sledge leading the league.

Set one (25-19) was a little slow for the Phoenix, who didn't pull away until late in the second half of the game, grabbing eight of the last ten points. They were helped by four blocks, which made up most of the six blocks that the team made in the entire match.

Set two (25-20) proved that Green Bay was more in control than the first, shown by a 5-0 run in the middle of the game. In this set, the Phoenix relied on kills, six coming from Taylor Wolf and six from Sledge.

Set three (25-20) saw the longest run of the game for the Phoenix, 6-0 early in the set to jump from being behind by three to being ahead by the same amount. Again, Green Bay put an emphasis on its attacks, and this time around the wealth was spread out much more evenly between multiple players.

The sophomore Wolf led the team with 14 kills, but much of the offense had their turn proving the Phoenix's depth this evening, as Sledge picked up 10 of her own, followed by senior Jessica Wolf with 9, freshman Alexandra Zakutney with 8, and sophomore Anna Eaton collecting 7.

In the back line, Vanessa Buman continues to be the top Green Bay defender with 16 digs, but senior Austyn Everingham and Yoss were also in the double-digits, scooping up 11 each. Yoss made her ninth double-double of the season, also taking home 43 assists, the most she's made in just three sets this season.
