Volleyball Falls to Cleveland State on Viking Turf, 0-3

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- Green Bay Phoenix volleyball (15-9, 10-2 HL) was handed a loss by Cleveland State (16-8, 10-2 HL) this afternoon on Vikings turf, the first after a historic ten-game streak.

Cleveland State 3, Green Bay 0
Green Bay fought in every set (23-25, 22-25, 23-25), but their momentum was ultimately shut down in the back half of each set due to four challenges that each ended up favoring the Vikings.

Nearly every set was close from the get-go, exchanging points back-and-forth throughout the match. As an offensive squad, Green Bay was clearly the most balanced: sophomore Taylor Wolf, sophomore Ashley Sledge, freshman Alexandra Zakutney, and senior Jessica Wolf each executed 12, 11, 10, and 9 kills, respectively, while Cleveland State's second-best attacker tied the older Wolf with 9. However, Phoenix also tallied 11 more attack errors than Cleveland State.

Additionally, before the last set, Green Bay was evenly matched with CSU in terms of blocks, which is significant because their opponents are the best team in league in that category. In the third game, the Vikings were able to collect a crucial three more to help turn the tide in their favor.

Despite the loss, as a team, there were still statistical categories where the Phoenix led. Sledge continues to have the highest clip out of any player in the match, recording a .412 hitting percentage this afternoon. Defensively, senior Vanessa Buman commanded both teams with 17 digs, while the younger Wolf grabbed a double-double with 16 digs to tie Cleveland State's libero. Finally, junior Maddie Yoss stayed consistent in her numbers, taking home two more assists than the Vikings' setter with 42 total.

Next Game
The Phoenix will have one more regular season match on the road next Friday, November 2 at 5:00 p.m. CT against Oakland. The team will then have a quick turnaround, hosting Wright State on Sunday, November 4 at 2:00 p.m. at the Kress Events Center.
