GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The Green Bay Phoenix volleyball team (9-8, 4-1 HL) swept the Oakland Grizzlies (6-11, 2-4 HL) in straight sets in their first home game of the season this evening, bringing their win streak to four in a row. The team was thriving thanks to the electric atmosphere provided by more than 500 fans and the
brand-new videoboard at the Kress Events Center.
"
The team really fed off the energy of the crowd experience, and I think the fans enjoyed the new video board," said head coach
Abbey Sutherland. "After a shaky start against a high-energy team, we needed to respond to that and settle down, and we did. We had good week of practice and it showed. Taylor's efforts this week paid off in the match. As always, we are working to develop team chemistry and build off each other in tough times. The women had good body language through the match, and pushed to finish when Oakland was coming on strong.
Coaching for the first time at the Kress
Events Center couldn't have been a better experience."
Green Bay 3, Oakland 0
Despite the sweep, the first set started off slow, with the Grizzlies showing up with a 6-0 lead over the Phoenix. Sophomore
Taylor Wolf was having none of that, shooting down four kills in a row to narrow the gap, with senior
Vanessa Buman helping out with two aces in a row. From there, the teams battled back and forth before three errors and a hammer from freshman
Alexandra Zakutney ended the game at 25-22, Green Bay.
Set two (25-18) was the most dominant of the match, with the Phoenix breaking away with a 5-0 scoring run early in the game and climbing to as wide as an eight-point margin. By set three (25-19), Green Bay was confident enough to grab a nine point lead in the first half and hold on, crushing Oakland's desperate attempt at a comeback.
Wolf had a monster evening, slaying 20 kills with a clip of .405, and her older sister, senior
Jessica Wolf, had a night as well, executing a season-high 12 of her own with a .320 hitting percentage. The duo helped the team move into first place in the Horizon League for hitting percentage. Junior
Maddie Yoss was all over the court, collecting 38 assists, while Buman scooped up 18 digs to continue to push her average number of digs per set higher and higher each match.
Next Game
The Phoenix will take a quick trip to Dayton, Ohio, this Sunday, October 7, taking on the Wright State Raiders (9-8, 1-4 HL) at 1:00 p.m. CT.
