GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Head coach
Kevin Borseth and the Green Bay women's basketball program announced the addition of three in-state recruits to the Phoenix roster in 2019-20. Brooklyn Blackburn, Julia Hartwig and Cassie Schiltz all inked national letters of intent to join the program on Wednesday morning.
"We are very excited about our 2019 recruiting class," head coach
Kevin Borseth said. "We feel they will help carry on the tradition of success here at Green Bay."
Brooklyn Blackburn
High School: Wauwatosa East
Height: 6'0"
Position: Forward
Blackburn on choosing Green Bay:
"I chose Green Bay because the team dynamic and the type of play fits me as a person. I enjoyed being there, and I feel like Green Bay will continue to make me better as a player."
Career Accolades:
MVP (2016-17, 2017-18)
Journal Sentinel 2017 Player to Watch
Second-team All-Greater Metro (2016-17)
First-team All-Greater Metro (2017-18)
2016-17 Now Newspapers All-Suburban Girls Basketball Team
Borseth on Blackburn:
"Brooklyn is an explosive athlete who is very competitive. She plays hard and means business every time she takes the floor. Her ability to score inside and out make her a very versatile player. While she has some very impressive high school stats to date we feel her best is yet to come."
HS Coach Mary Merg on Blackburn:
"Brooklyn has made a tremendous impact on the Wauwatosa East basketball program. It is clear to see from her awards, accolades, and records, but the impact goes beyond those statistics. She is a competitor. Every game she plays, she is always striving to be better than the other team. This competitiveness radiates to her teammates. Brooklyn realizes she doesn't have to go to battle alone, and brings this team-oriented demeanor on the court."
Julia Hartwig
High School: Janesville Parker
Height: 6'2"
Position: Forward
Hartwig on choosing Green Bay:
"I chose Green Bay because I love the environment. The whole atmosphere of the women's basketball program is competitive, self-driven, caring and what I consider a family. I always wanted to go somewhere that I consider a family for me when I had to leave my actual family. Green Bay has shown me that I can succeed here and love every second of it. I love the coaching staff and how they are always excited to talk to me and continually show me that they think I'm important. They have made this decision very easy. Coach Bronk told me on my first visit to Green Bay, "when you find the right place, you'll know. It will just feel right and click." I knew as soon as she said that, that Green Bay was the place for me. The girls on the team are very nice and hard working. I know that they will push me to do my best every day. I am very excited to be a Phoenix!"
Career Accolades:
Second team all-conference 15-16
First team all-conference 16-17
First team all-conference and state 17-18
Borseth on Hartwig:
"Julia is a back to the basket player who has a great frame for the collegiate game. She has very good hands which help her ability to catch and score around the rim. The first thing I saw however was her feet. She has the ability to guard which is so big in what we try to do here."
HS Coach Jennah Hartwig on Hartwig:
"Julia has been a dominating presence for us on the inside by scoring and rebounding. Her presence on the inside has allowed her teammates to play more aggressive defense on the outside and given her guards open looks at the basket. Julia's court vision and temperament are her best attributes. As a post player, Julia does a great job of finding her open shooters and getting them the ball where they need it. She has also done a great job of keeping her composure while playing a very physical post game."
Cassie Schiltz
High School: Luxemburg-Casco
Height: 5'11"
Position: Guard
Schiltz on choosing Green Bay:
"It has been my dream since I was a little kid to play college basketball at Green Bay. I grew up going to many of their games and remember thinking how cool it would be to play there. I chose Green Bay because of the great program they have built and the amazing coaches they have. Green Bay is also very close to home, and I wanted to stay close to my family and friends and hoped that they would come and watch me play the sport that I love."
Career Accolades
Three-time first team all-conference selection
Northeastern Conference Offensive Player of the year
Three-time team MVP
First team all-area selection
All-state honorable mention junior year
Borseth on Schiltz:
"Cassie is a dynamic scorer. She has the unique ability to both shoot and score at a high clip. In addition to that Cassie plays extremely well with her head up and is a phenomenal passer. She makes the players around her better."
HS Coach Jeff Jodar on Schlitz:
"Cassie has made Luxemburg-Casco girls' basketball relevant again. She immediately made an impact her freshman year by leading the team to its first winning record since its last state appearance in 2010/11. The team has improved each year since then because of her leadership and abilities. Cassie's best attribute is her ability to score. She can shoot the three, attack the basket and hit the mid-range jumper. This is a result of her tireless work ethic. She is also savvy enough to find other open players when she draws a crowd."
