Green Bay Volleyball Collects Several Horizon League Yearly Awards

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Horizon League announced its volleyball all-league awards on Thursday afternoon, with the Phoenix taking five of the six specialty awards. Head coach Abbey Sutherland was chosen as the league's Coach of the Year, sophomore Taylor Wolf was named Player of the Year as well as Offensive Player of the Year, senior Vanessa Buman received Defensive Player of the Year honors, and junior Maddie Yoss was selected as Setter of the Year. Alexandra Zakutney was also honored this year as a member of the All-Freshman team.

Sutherland was named Horizon League Coach of the Year after leading her team to the first-ever regular season championship in program history. Green Bay finished 13-3 in the conference without allowing a single loss at home, marking the program's most league wins in a single schedule as well as setting the longest win streak in Phoenix volleyball history in the process. With the league win, Green Bay also earned the number one heading into the Horizon League Tournament.

Wolf, the first Green Bay player to earn Player of the Year honors since 2003, led the way for the Phoenix with 461 kills throughout the season. She recorded an impressive 4.48 per set to dominate the entire league and earn Offensive Player of the Year honors as well. She also collected the most aces for Green Bay this year with 32, ranking third in the conference in that category. The sophomore also ranks within the top three on the team in digs, assists, and blocks, all of which combined averages her 5.08 points per set to separate the Horizon League First-Team member from the rest of the players in the league. Within the NCAA Division I rankings, Wolf sits at 14th in the country for points per set and kills per set.

Buman had a strong senior campaign, collecting a career-high 5.35 digs per set overall and 5.82 during conference play to lead the league and garner Defensive Player of Year honors. The Horizon League First-Team member also sits within the top ten players for service aces throughout the 16 league matches played. Within the NCAA Division I rankings, Buman is 24th in the country for digs per set. After this season, the libero will have made her mark in the Green Bay record books, ranking within the top ten players in Phoenix program history in multiple defensive categories.

Yoss directed the Green Bay offense in dominant fashion this season, leading the Horizon League handily in assists with 10.82 per set to earn Setter of the Year honors. The junior also helps the Phoenix in nearly every way possible on the court, sitting inside the top five players on the team for kills (112), digs (254), blocks (51), and aces (25), the last of which she is second on the team. Within the NCAA Division I rankings, the Horizon League First-Team member sits at 36th in the country for assists per set.

Zakutney was named to the league's All-Freshman team after a phenomenal freshman season, supporting the Phoenix offensive with the second-most kills on the team, 243, a notable 2.56 kills per set. She also has shown to be a force at the net, collecting 6 solo blocks out of her 34 total, nearly one out of every five blocks. Zakutney is only the 12th player in program history to earn Horizon League All-Freshman honors.
