Softball Falls Twice on Opening Day at UNI Dome Classic

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay softball team opened the 2018 campaign at the UNI Dome classic on Friday evening in Cedar Falls, Iowa, taking the field against tournament-host Northern Iowa and Drake. The Phoenix was unable to pick up a victory on opening day, falling to the Panthers 5-2, before later dropping its bout with the Bulldogs, 11-0.

Northern Iowa 5, Green Bay 2
Green Bay (0-2) was the first on the board in its first matchup of the season, as Allie Hislope used the first Phoenix hit of the season to bring Olivia Magaldi around to score.

Northern Iowa  (2-0) responded with five unanswered runs over the course of the next three innings to lead things 5-1 as the teams headed to the final frame. Green Bay threatened late as Alexis Otto led off the seventh with a single to center and Magaldi drew a walk to place two runners on-base with no outs.

Chyanne Onstad turned in her second hit of the day with runners on second and third to bring Magaldi home and decrease the deficit to three runs. The Panthers defense held strong from there out and retired consecutive batters to move to 2-0 on the day with a 5-2 win.

The Phoenix finished the game with seven total hits compared to the Panthers' 11 but played flawlessly in the field while UNI surrendered a pair of errors. The two teams combined to leave 21 runners on the base pads.
