Close Calls Favor Northern Kentucky in Saturday's Doubleheader

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay softball team found itself on the losing end in a pair of one-run games on Saturday afternoon at Northern Kentucky, dropping the first game of the day, 2-1, before falling 3-4 to conclude the series.

NORTHERN KENTUCKY 2, GREEN BAY 1
Northern Kentucky totaled half of its run production in the opening frame, plating a single run after advancing a runner into scoring position after a wild pitch followed by a single to center.

The next four innings were scoreless for both squads, with the Norse striking again in the sixth inning after two hits to lead the Phoenix 2-0.

Green Bay attempted to rally in the seventh, plating one run off a single from Sonia Schubert to shortstop. The Phoenix nearly tied the contest as Marjorie Sloan made a move for home, but the Norse defense held strong and secured the out at the plate to seal a 2-1 victory.

NORTHERN KENTUCKY 4, GREEN BAY 3
Two runs in the third and fourth innings after an RBI single from Chyanne Onstad and a defensive miscue put Green bay on top 2-0 as the teams readied for the fifth inning.

NKU plated two runs in the fifth off a series of errors, knotting the game at six with one inning remaining.

NKU led off the sixth with a triple to right field and advanced home on a throwing error. A double and a sacrifice fly granted the Norse its first advantage of the game, 4-3, with one inning left.

Like the first game, Green Bay tried to make a run in the final inning and led off the frame with a double to left from Bailey Schultz. Schultz later scored in the frame off a single from Morgan Bihun, but the Phoenix rally ended there as NKU claimed a 4-3 win and the series.

WP: Ginther (8-9)
LP: Alexis Kinnaird (0-7)

The Phoenix returns to the diamond on Tuesday at UIC with the first pitch of a doubleheader slated for 1 p.m.
