Green Bay Falls 3-2 In Tight Final Exhibition Match

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com)– The Green Bay women's soccer team took on its final exhibition match of the season at home today against Western Illinois, falling 3-2. After a 1-0 deficit in the first half, the Phoenix attempting with the Leathernecks in the second 45 minutes, but the women just could not make that extra goal to end with a tie game.
 
Despite the loss, Green Bay showed progressive effort on the field, recording 15 shots to Western Illinois' 10. They had several more offensive opportunities than they were given in the first two exhibition matches of the season, but after an unfortunate penalty kick at the very end of the first half, the team was forced to turn on the pressure an attempt a comeback.
 
Freshman McKayla Kertscher and sophomore Kendra Wolfgram each tallied a goal in today's match, with the help of teammate Carli Vogel. The senior was the strongest forward in the game for the Phoenix today, with 2 assists and multiple shots of her own. She commanded Green Bay's offensive line with several setups to give the Phoenix potential to score.
 
GOAL SUMMARY
44' | WIU | Emily Bollman (Penalty kick) After a foul in the box, the opponents set up for a close-range penalty kick and made it with a shot to the upper left corner of the goal.
 
68' | GB | Wolfgram (Assist: Vogel) Vogel broke away from the defensive line, dribbled forward, and crossed right across the field to Wolfgram, who took the ball up and into the left-hand corner of the net.
 
75' | WIU | Emily Bollman (Assist: Cassidy Grunewald) While Klatt was still on the ground after an initial save, Bollman took the opponent to spin the ball around her and score.
 
76' | WIU | Amy Andrews (Unassisted) In a close back-to-back goal, the opposing offensive line took the ball back into the box and crossed the ball away from the goalie and into the back right of the goal.
 
84' | GB | Kertscher (Assist: Vogel) Again finding a hole in the defense, Vogel took the ball up toward the goal. She passed the ball past the goalie and to Kertscher, who took the opportunity to send the ball into an open net.
