FORT WORTH, Tex. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The Green Bay volleyball team won its first match of the regular season today against SIUE but fell to Cowtown Classic tournament hosts TCU later in the evening.
After taking three of the four sets against the Cougars, the Phoenix returned to the court less than three hours later to take on the Horned Frogs, where they were unable to pick up a single set.
Green Bay 3, SIUE 1
Green Bay came out of the gates swinging in both of the first two sets (25-11, 25-13), taking an early lead and not letting the Cougars recover. However, their momentum slowed in the third set (22-25), as SIUE stuck closer to the Phoenix and were able to pass them in the latter half of the set. The women came back in the fourth set (25-18) though, battling through the first ten points and then solidifying their victory at the end.
Green Bay collected an impressive eight service aces in the match, led by sophomore
Taylor Wolf with four of her own. Wolf also performed the most kills for the team with 18 total, followed by sophomore
Kristen Paulus with 11 and senior sister
Jessica Wolf with nine.
Junior
Maddie Yoss also aided the Phoenix offense to victory, executing 40 assists throughout the match, which happened to be 20 more than the leading Cougar opponent's assists.
TCU 3, Green Bay 0
The Phoenix were met with a tougher opponent in TCU later in the day. Green Bay started each set with fire but couldn't hold on as each set progressed (25-17, 25-18, 25-19). The closest set was the third, where the Phoenix were leading by four points, a match-high. However, similar to the previous sets, the Horned Frogs took offensive control at the end and wore down Green Bay.
Despite the loss, some younger players on the team had the chance to gain vital experience for the coming season. Paulus led the team in kills during the second match with nine. She was closely trailed by freshman
Alexandra Zakutney, in her first collegiate match of her career, with seven. Defensively, sophomore
Ashley Sledge had the most blocks for Green Bay, posting three overall, equivalent to TCU's best player's total blocks.
Next Game
The Phoenix will play their last game of the tournament tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. CT, where they take on UAB.
