Green Bay Volleyball Splits Matches on First Day of Jackrabbits Invitational

BROOKINGS, S.D. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The Green Bay women's volleyball team (2-4) split matches today at the Comfort Suites Jackrabbit Invitational, falling in a fierce five-set match to Weber State (2-2), but coming back and defeating Seattle (2-3) in straight sets.

Returning from a 2-0 set deficit, the Phoenix pushed Weber State to a fifth set, but couldn't pull off the comeback victory. After a little over an hour of downtime, Green Bay made their way back to the court for an exciting 3-0 win over Seattle.

Weber State 3, Green Bay 2
The Phoenix went back and forth with the Wildcats all throughout the first set. Green Bay was able to push its opponents all the way to 30 points (30-28) after relentlessly tying up the game, but Weber State kept the lead it had from the beginning to the end. These efforts from the Phoenix seemed to have taken its toll, however, giving the Wildcats a 10-point victory in the second set (25-15) after the team couldn't seem to avoid attack errors.

However, going into the third set, Green Bay came back as if they were an entirely different squad. The team kept their plays clean and ramped up their defensive efforts as they surged ahead and finished 25-21 to take set number three. In the fourth set, they started behind the Wildcats before coming back, battling back and forth, and finally tiring their opponents out to end the set 25-18. The deciding set eventually went to Weber State, defeating the Phoenix 15-11.

Despite the loss, Green Bay had match leaders in several areas. Sophomore Taylor Wolf was easily the star offensive player for Green Bay, leading both teams in kills with 29. Of those, 20 were made in the first three sets alone. Junior Maddie Yoss also led both teams in assists, putting up 52 overall. Defensively, senior Vanessa Buman had the most digs in the match, notching 20.

Green Bay 3, Seattle 0
Later in the afternoon, the Phoenix faced off against the Redhawks, looking for a win and coming away from the match with success. The first set (25-23) was tight, with Seattle leading early in the match, but Green Bay was able to hold on and grab the set point.

The team seemed to regain its confidence as the match went on. Again, they battled with the Redhawks for the first half of the second set, but after tying the game 16-16, the Phoenix dominated the end of the set, only allowing their opponents three points. They finished set two 25-18. Set three (25-16) started off even better for Green Bay as they took out Seattle from the get-go, proving that the Phoenix were in control of the match. While the other team was forced into two timeouts, Green Bay didn't have to take a single timeout to regroup in the last set.

Again, it was Wolf that stood out with 17 kills, but this match was different than the previous one in that the team was much more balanced out offensively. Sophomore Ashley Sledge made 10 kills, with an impressive hitting percentage of .529, while freshman Alexandra Zakutney had nine kills and was an attack leader, attempting 20. In addition, Yoss performed a season-high 41 assists within three sets.

The Phoenix also turned in better defensive numbers than the earlier match, with Yoss turning in a huge block solo. Both Yoss and sophomore Anna Eaton collected three blocks, while Sledge and sophomore Kristen Paulus also helped out with two each. Again, it was Buman who scooped up the most digs, with 14 total.

Next Game
Green Bay will conclude the Jackrabbits Invitational tomorrow afternoon against hosts South Dakota State. The match will begin at 2:00 p.m.
