GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay women's soccer team opened its league season Saturday afternoon against Northern Kentucky at Aldo Santaga, falling to the Norse 2-1.
Northern Kentucky (5-3, 1-0) owned a strong advantage in shots 19-9 as well as shots-on-goal 10-3. The Norse notched its first goal midway through the first half after a free kick allowed a redirect in the box to create space from the Phoenix defense, granting NKU's Emily Soltes a quality look at the Phoenix net for her third goal of the season.
Early in the second half, Shawna Zaken tallied her third goal of the season after NKU teammate Samantha Duwel drew the attention of the Phoenix defense, allowing Zaken an open look at the goal to put the Norse on top 2-0.
Green Bay (2-7, 0-1) cut the deficit in half with just over 10 minutes remaining, as
McKayla Kertscher worked through the NKU backline and found
Alycia Wright towards the center of the box for her second goal of the season.
The Phoenix was unable to match the Norse before time expired, falling to Northern Kentucky 2-1 to open Horizon League play.
