GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss at home against Western Michigan on Wednesday night after a late goal from the Broncos.
Western Michigan (5-4-0) picked up its fourth-straight win in the 2-1 decision over the Phoenix and handed Green Bay its second-consecutive loss for the first time since the 2016 season.
Green Bay (4-2-1) tied the game at one-all after
Kevin Cela scored the first goal of his young career in the 67th minute of action on a free kick from around 30 yards out. The Phoenix finished with nine shots in the matchup and enjoyed quality looks, placing seven attempts on-goal.
WMU scored the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute after a ball played into the Phoenix box was redirected to the foot of Caden Jackman for his first score of the season.
Nikola Kahvedzic protected the Phoenix net in the break from league action, securing five saves on the night despite allowing a pair of goals.
"Playing well and looking good doesn't always translate to wins," head coach
Jeremy Bonomo said. "That's what is occurring right now, and we need to realize winning is the priority and not the other way around. We will move forward and adjust accordingly."
Green Bay will return to its league season in a home match on Saturday against IUPUI, as the Phoenix welcomes the Jaguars to Aldo Santaga Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
