Green Bay Volleyball Picks Up a Win and a Loss at Sycamore Invitational

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The Green Bay volleyball team (4-5) took a dominating victory and a tight loss today at the Sycamore Invitational in Terre Haute, Indiana. The Phoenix began the day with an early 9:00 a.m. game against Central Michigan (2-6), but it looked like the Chippewas were the team that wasn't quite awake yet when Green Bay downed them 3-0. In the evening, they faced hosts Indiana State (5-2), where the match was pushed to five sets, but the Phoenix barely fell at the end.

Green Bay 3, Central Michigan 0
Each set (25-16, 25-23, 25-13) began quite even with the Chippewas, but in both the middle of both the first and the third set, the Phoenix took control of the game and rarely allowed their opponents to get comfortable.

In set one, Green Bay went on a 7-0 scoring run to end the match, grabbing two service aces from sophomore Anna Eaton in the process. The women struck early in the third set to show that this was their match, going from 3-4 up to 9-4 in similar fashion. The second set was tight, with Central Michigan fighting to turn things around, but thanks in part to multiple errors on the Chippewas part, the Phoenix were able to pull off the win.

Both Green Bay's offense and defense were nicely balanced this morning, led by sophomore Taylor Wolf with 13 kills, while freshman Alexandra Zakutney grabbed eight kills. Meanwhile, Eaton shone with seven kills and a .778 hitting percentage. Senior Vanessa Buman scooped up 11 digs, followed by junior Maddie Yoss, junior Emily Lautenschlager, and senior Austyn Everingham with eight each, and sophomore Ashley Sledge helped out with three block assists to her name.

Indiana State 3, Green Bay 2
This match was the epitome of on-the-edge-of-your-seat, back-and-forth action. Every set was a narrow as it could get (25-23, 21-25, 25-23, 19-25, 14-16), but the distinguishing factor was the Sycamore defense, putting up 15 total blocks as compared to Green Bay's three. While we had the advantage in kills, our errors as the match went on also took a toll in giving ISU the victory.

Despite the loss, the match was tightly contested, and there were plenty of good takeaways for the Phoenix. Wolf and Sledge kept the team alive with 40 kills combined, more than 10 than the combined efforts of the opposing team's leaders, while Buman recorded an impressive 36 digs, 10 more than the best Indiana State libero.

Next Game
The Phoenix will play their last game of the tournament tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. CT, taking on Saint Louis. The Billikens played Central Michigan today as well, also taking them down in straight sets.
