CLEVELAND, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- Freshman
Joey Bourgeois netted his first career goal and the Green Bay men's soccer team remained perfect on the season with another positive result on Saturday night, downing Cleveland State on the road 2-1 to open Horizon League play with a win. The Phoenix improves to an unblemished 4-0-1 on the season, but more importantly gets off to a 1-0-0 start in League play.
"The guys worked for the win tonight," head coach
Jeremy Bonomo said. "It's a tough place to play and our players deserve a lot of credit for their effort."
Bourgeois tallied the game-winner in the 52nd minute, after find the loose ball at his feet and powering it into the back of the net to the left of the keeper. It was a much needed answer after the Vikings (0-4-0, 0-1-0 HL) responded to tie the match at 1-1 in the 39th minute. GB was able to get on the board first, thanks to an own goal after the CSU keeper misjudged a punch on a ball crossed in.Â
Making his fourth-straight start,
Jamison Yoder picked up another win in goal and is now a perfect 4-0-0 on the year. The Phoenix defense kept CSU at bay all night, although the hosts were able to breakthrough on one of their few scoring opportunities.
The win extends GB's unbeaten streak in HL regular season play to five matches.
GB will return to new Aldo Santaga Stadium next Saturday (Sept. 15) night, playing host to Northern Kentucky under the lights for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The game will highlight a day-long Soctoberfest celebration, with food and drink specials and giveaways set for UWGB students. For more information on the event,
