Swimming and Diving Returns to Competition, Fights Northern Michigan in Tough Dual

MARQUETTE, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay swimming and diving teams were back in action today for the first time in 2019, traveling north to Division II opponents Northern Michigan. Just out of a long period of intense training, both the men and the women were unable to overcome a sharp Wildcats roster. Head coach Reed Robelot remarked, "We have to give big credit to NMU's student-athletes and their staff. We had a handful of good wins, but their squad was ready to perform at a higher level today." Full results can be found HERE.

On the boards, the men's diving squad picked up crucial points for the team today. Junior Josh Yahr won the one-meter event with a score of 260.40, while classmate Derrick Prenot was not far off, taking second place with 253.23 points. On the three-meter, however, the men swept Northern Michigan with a 1-2-3-4 performance. Prenot led the way with a sound score of 294.82, followed by freshman Cameron Munter's season-best 251.77. Yahr was less than half a point behind, collecting 251.35 points, while freshman Miles Rohrbaugh rounded up the pack with 246.90 points. Maddy Corbin earned third place on the 1-meter for the women, posting a score of 216.37. Similarly, the junior collected bronze on the taller of the two boards with 214.20 points.

"Derrick was pretty consistent with a strong performance for the win on the three-meter board, plus a close second to Josh on the one-meter," added diving coach Tom Stover. "We still have some fine-tuning to do before the season wraps up."

The 1000 yard freestyle was the first individual swimming event of the afternoon, coming soon after the men and the women both proved their depth by taking second and third in the 200 medley relay. In the women's long distance race, sophomore Logan Johnsen placed third with a personal best time of 10:51.67. On the men's side, freshman Xabier Carneiro touched the wall second with a time of 9:42.20 to lead the Phoenix.

Taking home a victory this afternoon was sophomore Anna Liu in the 200 freestyle, posting a season-best 1:52.35 to touch out a Wildcat foe by two tenths of a second. On the other side of the roster, Ari Kissel was narrowly out-touched by two Northern Michigan opponents by less than a second, as the sophomore earned bronze in 1:43.62.

The 100 backstroke was up next, as freshman Helena Heuberger stopped the clock at 57.66, good for second place. The Green Bay men saw senior Charlie Warren as the top finisher, placing fourth with a time of 53.08.

The 100 breaststroke followed the backstroke, with top Phoenix performers on both sides of the roster taking third place. For the women, junior Clare Martell registered a 1:08.28, while freshman Conner Funke recorded a time of 58.60.

Riley Darling came in clutch as always for the men in his signature 200 butterfly. The junior won the race with a time of 1:52.80. Senior Annika Engstrom stepped up for the lady 'Nix to place third in the same race with a respectable 2:11.01.

The sprinters collected some much-needed points in the 50 freestyle on the women's side. Freshman Gabrielle Marlatt finished at 24.87 for second while senior Alicia Hanson touched the wall at 24.99 for third. In the men's event, sophomore Ben Redman's time of 21.40 was narrowly beaten in a race for first place by eight one-hundredths of a second.

Liu collected a second-place finish in her second event of the day, the 100 freestyle. Her time of 52.00 on the nose was less than two tenths behind the first place Wildcat. Classmate Redman also earned another silver, stopping the clock at 47.68.

Another gold was earned for the women in the 200 backstroke, thanks to Heuberger. Her time of 2:04.95 was her fastest unrested time so far this season. Warren returned in this event as well, this time placing third in 1:56.30.

Martell moved up a spot in the longer of the two breaststroke events, fighting off an opponent to hold onto second place, and posting a time of 2:26.61 in the process. For the men's 200 breast, sophomore Max Boehnlein earned silver as well in 2:07.88. Funke was consistent in the third position, touching at 2:10.44.

The 500 freestylers saw senior Rosalyn Stoa as the Phoenix to beat on the women's side, and the senior cruised to a 5:13.42 for second overall. The men went 2-3-4, led by freshman Daniel Frederick's solid 4:44.66. Senior Manny Hernandez and junior Jack VanZee were neck-and-neck throughout the race, but the former placed third in 4:50.18 while the latter settled for fourth with his 4:51.04.

Darling defended his title as the butterfly king in the shorter of the two races, touching the wall at 51.56 for first place. Sophomore Paul Sadergaski was not far behind, placing third in the race with a season-best time of 52.04. On the women's side, Liu took home another second-place finish in her final individual event of her lineup, the 100 butterfly, earning a time of 57.49. Junior Claire Stuart collected third in 1:00.13.

Stoa threw down another solid race in her 200 IM, dominating the field by over three seconds with her 2:10.90. Kissel collected a silver handily in the men's event, posting a time of 1:56.81 with help from a quick front-half.

The meet ended with a victory for the Green Bay women in the 400 freestyle relay, while the men squeaked by with a second place. The A team of Liu, Heuberger, Marlatt, and Stoa combined to beat their Northern Michigan opponents by over two seconds, ending with a final time of 3:34.41.

The Phoenix have two more Horizon League dual meets left this month, beginning with an away meet in Chicago next Saturday, January 19th against the UIC Flames. The following weekend, Green Bay will celebrate Senior Day at home versus Milwaukee.
