Box Score GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- Green Bay men's soccer faced off with Milwaukee at Aldo Santaga Stadium on Saturday night and defeated its league foe 2-0 courtesy a brace from
Fredi Ortega.
The matchup was the 43
rd all-time meeting for the Chancellor's Cup as Milwaukee entered the evening fixture with possession.
The first half saw few total shots from the Phoenix, but what the offense lacked in quantity it made up for in quality, outshooting the opposing Panthers 3-1 in on-goal attempts despite MKE owning a 9-3 advantage in total shots.
GB increased its attack early in the second half and it paid off, as
Fredi Ortega registered his second goal of the season after a nice dish from
Ian Smith who was able to draw the attention of the defense.
Ortega added an insurance goal in the match's final minute after teammate
Michael Carreon centered the ball, allowing Ortega to chip a shot over the Panthers' keeper.
Green Bay takes ownership of the of the coveted Chancellor's Cup for the eighth time in the in the past 12 seasons, doing so with its second victory of the league season and leapfrogging its in-state rival in the conference standings.
The Phoenix defense shined in the contest and registered its second-consecutive shutout in Horizon League play, allowing only two shots on goal which was secured by the sure hands of
Jamison Yoder.
Green Bay is the only team in Wisconsin to defeat Milwaukee, as the Panthers secured victories over the Badgers and Golden Eagles this season.
Green Bay continues conference play at Northern Kentucky next weekend, as the Phoenix takes the pitch against the Norse at 6 p.m.
