YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The Green Bay women's soccer team secured a crucial three points in a 2-1 victory over Youngstown State on Saturday afternoon, moving to 7-6-1 on the season and 1-3-1 in conference play.
Jordyn Cook and
Morgan Courier were the Phoenix goal scorers on the day, with assists coming from
McKayla Kertscher,
Caitlin Hawley and
Alyssa Barnes.
GB found the back of the net in the 26th minute when Cook scored her third goal of the season after Kertscher and Hawley directed the ball to the charging forward. The Phoenix held the Penguins scoreless the remainder of the half to lead things 1-0 at the break.
Courier added an insurance goal in the 61
st minute, her second of the season, after fellow senior Barnes moved the ball to Courier in spot she could beat the keeper.
Green Bay allowed a goal in the 84
th minute but was able to hold the Penguins scoreless in their search for the equalizer in the match's final minutes, securing a 2-1 victory on the road.
Claudia Janese served as the protector of the net for the majority of the match and tallied Green Bay's only save on the afternoon.
Green Bay is set to host senior day at Aldo Santaga Stadium next weekend, as the Phoenix welcomes Oakland on Saturday at 2 p.m. GB will then conclude its home slate on Wednesday, Oct. 23 against UIC at 7 p.m.
