GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) ---The Green Bay volleyball team (12-6, 4-2 HL) defeated IUPUI this afternoon in five sets to go undefeated on the weekend (25-16, 25-20, 19-25, 21-25, 15-13).
Green Bay 3, IUPUI 2
The Phoenix fought till the very end to secure the win against the Jaguars this afternoon. Junior
Taylor Wolf took home the only double-double for Green Bay by tallying 22 kills and 15 digs on the afternoon. Sophomore
Shannon Coughlin followed Wolf in kills with 10 and junior
Ashley Sledge added 7 as well. Senior setter
Maddie Yoss logged 46 of the team's 49 assist and a pair of kills for the match. As a team, the squad finished with 52 kills and a .220 hitting percentage.
Defensively, the team finished with 74 digs and 11 total-blocks. Freshman libero
Brenna Hesse and senior
Emily Lautenschlager led in digs with 18 each. For Lautenschlager, this is a new season-high.Â
Taylor Wolf and
Ashley Sledge each recorded 5 block-assist while
Anna Eaton had 4 herself. Eaton also had 3 of team's 5 aces for the match.
Set one (25-16) saw the Phoenix cruise to take the first. The duo of
Taylor Wolf and
Shannon Coughlin led the way on offense with 4 kills while sophomore
Alexis Dorner tallied 3. Defensively,
Emily Lautenschlager led with 6 digs followed by
Brenna Hesse and
Annelise Sparks who each contributed 4.
Set two (25-20) much closer but had the Phoenix take a 2-0 lead of the match. Down 4-10, Green Bay began to go on small rallies and eventually knotted the set up back up at 13-13. After the Jaguars took the next point, the Phoenix went on a 5-0 run to take control and didn't give the lead up afterwards.Â
Taylor Wolf led with 5 kills while
Shannon Coughlin and
Ashley Sledge added 3 a-piece.
Set three (19-25) went the way of the Jaguars. The Phoenix took an early 10-4 lead in the third but the Jaguars slowly closed the gap. With the score at 16-11, IUPUI went on a 6-0 rally to take the 16-17 lead during the set. The Jaguars then went on a 5-0 run to put the score at 22-17 and eventually closed out the Phoenix to claim the third.
Set four (21-25) had IUPUI tie the match up and forced the fifth set. The Phoenix didn't struggle offensively necessary, hitting .241. However, the Jaguars we're sharper, owning a hitting percentage of .323 and claiming two more kills. Green Bay also hurt themselves by committing 10 total-errors which swung things in favor for IUPUI to take the set.
Set five (15-13) saw the Phoenix come out of the match victorious. With the fifth tied at 5-5, a couple of attack-errors by IUPUI gave Green Bay the slight lead. The set was tied again at 9-9 when
Taylor Wolf recorded back-to-back kills to give the Phoenix the lead again. With the team down 12-13, the Jaguars committed three errors to end the match and secure the Phoenix win.
Next Game
Green Bay will be back in action at the Kress Center this Friday (October 18
th) for a matchup against Wright State at 6:00 p.m. CT. The match will be the team's 2
nd Annual Alzheimer's Awareness Night and will feature a variety of ways to donate.
