GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) ---The Green Bay volleyball team (13-6, 5-2 HL) took down league-leading Wright State tonight at the Kress Center (18-25, 25-16, 25-21, 25-15).
Green Bay 3, Wright State 1
Despite the slow start in the first set, the Phoenix looked impressive in the final three sets to defeat the league-leading Raiders at home. Sophomore
Shannon Coughlin led offensively for the squad with a career-high 23 kills with a hitting percentage of .322. Junior
Taylor Wolf followed up with 13 and a hitting percentage of .256. Senior setter
Maddie Yoss recorded 46 of the teams 50 assist on the night and added 9 digs.
Defensively, freshman
Annelise Sparks led with a career-high 24 digs while
Taylor Wolf completed her double-double with 19 digs. Freshman libero
Brenna Hesse also added 16 digs for the Phoenix. As a team, the squad had 9 total-blocks. Junior
Ashley Sledge led with 7 block-assist.
Set one (18-25) went the way of the Raiders. Wright State opened the match up 6-1 before Coach Sutherland called a timeout for Green Bay. The Phoenix eventually tied the set up at 14-14 after going on a 6-0 run. Unfortunately, the Raiders went on a 5-0 run themselves to take a 15-21 lead and closed things out to take a 1-0 lead for the match.
Set two (25-16) saw Green Bay rally to tie the match up. After hitting -.129 in the first, the Phoenix followed up strong with an impressive .317 hitting percentage in the second set. The set started off back-and-forth but at the midpoint, the team led 13-8. Green Bay took the set off the kill from
Shannon Coughlin.
Set three (25-21) had the Phoenix take the 2-1 lead for the match. Green Bay opened the set up 4-1, but Wright State knotted the third back up at 5-5. Neither side could truly pull away, but with the squad up 21-18, the Raiders suffered three attack-errors in the row to give the Phoenix a six point lead.Â
Shannon Coughlin once again got the kill on set point for the squad.
Set four (25-15) saw Green Bay claim the set and the match. With the Raiders leading 8-9, the Phoenix took off on a 10-0 run to put the fourth set out of reach. The team went on to win comfortably and took the final two points off a kill from
Ashley Sledge and an attack-error from Wright State.
In the team's 2
nd Annual Alzheimer's Awareness Night, the Green Bay volleyball team raised over $5,300.00, which is being donated to the Alzheimer's Association to help fight the devastating disease.
Next Game
Green Bay will be back at the Kress Center tomorrow (October 19
th) for a matchup against Northern Kentucky at 4:00 p.m. CT.
