Men's Soccer Looks to Continue Momentum at Northern Kentucky

10/18/2019 8:30:00 PM

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The Green Bay men's soccer team will make the eight and a half hour trek to Highland Heights, Ky., to face the Norse of Northern Kentucky in both teams' sixth Horizon League pairing of the season.

Game Information: Saturday at Northern Kentucky – 6 p.m. // Streamed on ESPN3

Most Recently for the Phoenix: Green Bay defeated in-state foe, Milwaukee last Saturday to win back the Chancellor's Cup. The first half ended deadlocked at zero with both teams threatening at times, but neither converting their chances. Eight minutes and forty two seconds into half number two, Fredi Ortega slid past the backline of the defense and Marcus Del Vecchio delivered a picture perfect pass and Ortega finished it in the bottom left corner with the goalkeeper bearing down on him. The Phoenix defense held tough after jumping out to a lead and the defense later translated to offense in the final minute as Milwaukee had all of their men forward on a corner kick and Green Bay countered with Ortega putting the nail in the coffin and solidifying himself as the man of the match by scoring via chip shot past three Panthers players.

Scouting the Norse: Northern Kentucky will enter the competition with a 4-7-1 record overall and a 2-3 Horizon League record. They have lost their last two games after winning 11-0 against Berea College on October 9th. The Phoenix and the Norse are both currently tied for 5th in the Horizon League standings. The two teams have both climbed up the conference rankings, both starting out 0-2 in league play. This will be the sixth time these two programs meet in men's soccer with Green Bay leading the series 3-2. Northern Kentucky edged out the Phoenix 2-1 at Aldo Santaga Stadium last year. Alex Greive leads the charge for the Norse with 8 goals on the season, which is good enough for second best in the Horizon League in that category. Baj Maan is second-best in the conference in saves with 54 on the season so the Phoenix will have their work cut out for them.
