Green Bay Goes the Distance in Victory Over Oakland

ROCHESTER, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) ---The Green Bay volleyball team completed the comeback on the road tonight in their victory over Oakland (25-12, 24-26, 12-25, 26-24, 15-12).

Green Bay 3, Oakland 2
Tonight's match was a rollercoaster ride for the Phoenix, but the team proved that the defending champions can never be counted out of the fight.  In the 2-1 comeback, junior Taylor Wolf led the way offensively with a season-high 25 kills and took home a hitting percentage of .373.  Junior Ashley Sledge followed by tying her career-high in kills with 16 and posting a .419 hitting percentage of her own.  Sophomore Shannon Coughlin was a big spark off the bench tonight, logging 7 kills in 15 attack-attempts during the three sets she played.  Junior Anna Eaton earned a .333 hitting percentage on the night herself, tallying 5 kills off of 12 attack-attempts on the night.

Besides earning a new season-high of 57 assist, senior setter Maddie Yoss, led the way defensively by contributing 18 digs and 3 block-assist.  Freshman libero Brenna Hesse ended tonight's match right behind Yoss with 17 digs while Taylor Wolf capped off the members in double-digits with 10 of her own.  Eight different members of the team claimed at least a dig during the match, while six different players earned either a solo-block or block-assist.  As a team, the Phoenix finished with 68 digs, 2 solo-blocks, and 12 block-assist.

Set one (25-12) saw the Phoenix take the hot start to begin the match.  Green Bay started the set up 4-0 off a pair of kills from Taylor Wolf and a couple errors from Oakland.  Midway through, the Phoenix were in control of the match 13-7.  With the set at 16-11, Green Bay went on an 8-0 run to put things out of reach.  After a point from the Golden Grizzlies, a service error followed to give the set to the Phoenix.  The team hit an impressive .462 percentage, with Zoi Sherolli leading the way with 5 kills.

Set two (24-26) went the way of the Golden Grizzlies.  The Phoenix were up early 8-3, but the lead slowly began to shrink.  Oakland also went on a 7-0 run during the set to take an 11-14 lead over Green Bay.  The two teams went back-and-forth the rest of the way with the Phoenix taking the 24-23 lead late and looking as though they'd claim the set.  Unfortunately, the Golden Grizzlies closed out on a 3-0 run to close the second and tied the match up at 1-1.

Set three (12-25) had the Golden Grizzlies take the third.  With both sides knotted up at 6-6, Oakland began to take control. With the score at 8-12, the Golden Grizzlies went on a 5-0 run on the Phoenix and didn't look back.  Despite Green Bay logging more attack-attempts, Oakland finished with 7 more kills than the Phoenix and had a ridiculous hitting percentage of .682 during the set.  Green Bay didn't help themselves either by committing 5 attack-errors and 2 service-errors.

Set four (26-24) was a back-and-forth set, similar to the second, between the Phoenix and Golden Grizzlies.  Green Bay came back to life after that forgettable third set and put Oakland away late.  At the halfway mark, the Phoenix went on a 3-0 run to tie things up at 13 all.  The two teams traded the lead from that point on, but down 23-24, Green Bay closed on another 3-0 run seal the deal.  As a team, the Phoenix had an impressive hitting percentage of .327 and claimed 5 more kills than the Golden Grizzlies in the set.

Set five (15-12) saw Green Bay claim the victory.  Tied up at 3-3, the Phoenix went on a 4-0 run thanks to kills from Taylor Wolf and Ashley Sledge, a block from the duo, and an attack-error from the Golden Grizzlies.  The squad was up 12-6, when Oakland went on a 4-0 run of their own to close the gap at 12-10.  Nonetheless, Green Bay's last three points came the way of a block from Maddie Yoss and Anna Eaton, a kill from Taylor Wolf, and an attack-error from the Golden Grizzlies to end the match.
