CLEVELAND, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) ---The Green Bay volleyball team (10-6, 2-2 HL) fell this evening to Cleveland State (25-22, 25-17, 24-26, 22-25, 7-15).
Green Bay 2, Cleveland State 3
The Phoenix were up 2-0, but the Vikings overcame deficits in both the third and fourth sets to take the win. Despite the loss, junior
Taylor Wolf led offensively by logging a new season-high with 27 kills. Â Sophomore
Shannon Coughlin earned herself a new career-high in kills with 22 and hit an impressive .388 percentage for the match. Senior setter
Maddie Yoss had herself a day as well by contributing a season-high 58 assist, a team best 23 digs, 3 aces, 2 kills and a block-assist.
Defensively, freshman libero
Brenna Hesse followed Yoss with 21 digs.Â
Taylor Wolf added 14, senior
Emily Lautenschlager tallied 13 and freshman
Annelise Sparks had a career-high 11 during the match. Junior
Ashley Sledge led the team in blocks with 4 block-assist, followed by the trio of
Anna Eaton,
Zoi Sherolli and
Taylor Wolf who each chipped in 3.
Set one (25-22) went the way of the Phoenix. Green Bay's start to the set was sluggish and put them on the back foot. Down 5-13, the team went on a 4-0 run to grab some moment, which caused Cleveland State to call a timeout. The Phoenix took their first lead late at 18-17 and didn't give it up the rest of the way.Â
Taylor Wolf led offensively with 6 kills, but
Maddie Yoss did a little bit of everything for the squad tallying 12 assist, 3 digs, 2 aces and a kill in the first set.
Set two (25-17) had Green Bay lead the entire way and take the 2-0 lead in the match. The Phoenix were efficient offensively, logging 16 kills and owning a .424 hitting percentage. Cleveland State never let the set quite get out of reach, but Green Bay held steady. At the midway point, the squad led 13-10 and then went on to close out the set by claiming five of the last six points.
Set three (24-26) saw the Vikings come from behind. The third set was tight throughout and was knotted up at 13-13 halfway through. With the Phoenix down 13-14, the team went on a 4-0 run to grow some separation behind the two sides. Nonetheless, Cleveland State wouldn't go away and things were once again tied up late at 24-24. Unfortunately, a block from a pair of Vikings and a kill from Trinniti Hall ended the third for Green Bay.
Set four (22-25) had the Vikings once again comeback to force the game to a fifth set. The first half of the set went back-and-forth, with the score knotted up at 14 midway. Green Bay then went on a 4-0 run to grow their lead and were up late 21-16. Cleveland State then went on a 5-0 run of their own to tie the set up. With the score at 22-22, the Vikings finished on a 3-0 run to claim the fourth.
Set five (7-15) saw the Vikings claim the fifth and take the match. With score at 4-4, Cleveland State went on a 5-0 run to take the lead. Green Bay took the next two points off a kill from
Taylor Wolf and a block from the pairing of
Ashley Sledge and
Zoi Sherolli. The Vikings then took six of the final seven point, which earned them the victory.
