BOZEMAN, Mont. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- Thanks to a total team effort with a 61 percent shooting night and a career-high 28 points from freshman
Amari Davis, Green Bay burned past Montana State on the road on Saturday night at Worthington Arena in Bozeman, winning 98-72 to open its four-game road swing. Five players scored in double-figures, helping the Phoenix (3-4) to enjoy its largest road win since it beat Chicago State in January 2016 by 33 points.
Even with five players in double-figures, it was the newcomer Davis who shined brightest offensively in his first career start. The Ohio native dumped 28 points on the host Bobcats (5-3) in 28 minutes of action. He shot 13-for-18 from the field, has scored 10 or more points in all seven games this season and now leads GB in scoring with 16.3 PPG.
Montana State scored the first points of the game, but a 3-pointer by
PJ Pipes to follow was all GB needed to cruise from there on. The Phoenix dominated the rest of the first half, leading by as many as 20 points and pouring in 51 first-half points. The team shot just over 67 percent in the first half, and even used a
Kameron Hankerson shot at the buzzer to close out the first 20 minutes.
Senior sharpshooter
JayQuan McCloud was on point from long range, hitting 4 of his 8 3-point attempts on his way to scoring 18 points. McCloud also dished out 6 assists, helping his frontcourt mates
Cody Schwartz and
Josh McNair both finish with 13 points. Hankerson was the other Phoenix player in double-figures, scoring 10 points off the bench with a pair of triples.
The second half was much of the same, but Montana State did get within 10 before GB used another run to pull away.
Green Bay can celebrate this nice road win, considering it still has three more in a row to play. The next trip comes next Wednesday night when the team visits No. 25 Xavier in Cincinnati. The game will be televised on FS2 and tips at 6 p.m. CT.
