HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- Green Bay opened the day with a victory by doubling up Northern Kentucky at 8-4, before falling in 12 innings as the Norse claimed the series two games to one by a score of 3-2.
Green Bay 8, Northern Kentucky 4
The Norse were the first on the board on Saturday, plating the first run of the day in the second inning followed by two runs in the third to build a three-run advantage before the first Phoenix runs crossed the plate.
Green Bay begin to chip away at NKU's lead in the fifth frame, scoring two runs after a Mogan Bihun home run brought herself and
Bailey Schultz home to make it a one-run game.
Northern Kentucky added one run in the fifth to increase its lead to two runs at 4-2, but Green Bay took control of the game in the sixth inning with a six-run frame to lead things 8-4 with only three Norse outs remaining.
Green Bay staved off the final NKU attack to pick up its first win in the series, with
Kayla Schwebke being credited with her eighth win of the season.
Bailey Schultz finished 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI for one of the three multi-hit games for the Phoenix offense.
Kalyssa Koehn and
Samantha Soley both registered two hits in the matchup.
Northern Kentucky 3, Green Bay 2 (12 innings)
Green Bay got off to a hot start in the second matchup of the day, scoring both of its runs in the first inning after
Emily Madeiros drew a walk with the bases loaded to bring home Bihun.
Green Bay added its second run after a single up the middle from
Greta Thompson which brought
Alyssa Brewer in to score.
NKU scored its first run in the bottom of the first followed by another in the sixth inning to tie things at 2-2. The pitching and defensive efforts from both squads forced extra innings in the second matchup, with the deciding run not being scored until the 12th inning by the Norse.
NKU claimed the series with the 3-2 win in 12 innings, taking two games to Green Bay's one. Green Bay outhit Northern Kentucky 11-10, but the Phoenix stranded 14 runners on-base compared to NKU's eight.
Green Bay returns home for a three-game series against Northern Kentucky with the first game being played on Friday at 4 p.m. at Circle Tap.
