GREEN BAY (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Green Bay softball took the diamond against league-leading UIC on Tuesday afternoon, falling in both games of a doubleheader at Flames Field. The Flames picked up a 7-0 win to open the series and held off the Phoenix with a 4-3 decision to round out the day.
UIC 7, Green Bay 0
UIC scored four runs in the first two innings to set the tone early in game one of the three-game series. The Flames also added one run in the fourth and two runs in the fifth before holding the Phoenix scoreless through all seven innings to seal a 7-0 victory.
Kalyssa Koehn and
Jenna Smarzinski tallied the only hits for GB in game one, with the Flames amassing 15 in the matchup.
UIC 4, Green Bay 3
Matching its first-inning total from game one, the Flames plated two runs in the opening frame to jump out to an early lead before adding another run in the third.
Green Bay answered with two runs in the fifth inning after
Kalyssa Koehn homered to center field, scoring
Rebecca Radtke in the process.
UIC scored one run in the bottom of the fifth inning to increase its lead to two runs, but Green Bay brought Smarzinki around to touch home after
Bailey Schultz reached on a fielder's choice to the shortstop.
GB was unable to pull even with the Flames in its final plate appearances as UIC claimed a 4-3 win and a sweep of the doubleheader.
The Phoenix closes out the series with the Flames on Wednesday with a single game slated for 3 p.m.
