GREEN BAY (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Oakland sealed the series win on Saturday afternoon with a 3-2 victory in the first game of the doubleheader, but the Phoenix responded with a 7-6 win in the series finale to close out the pairing on a high note.
Oakland 3, Green Bay 2
Oakland scored the first run of the day and it didn't take long to do so, touching home in the first inning to take control of things early.
Green Bay responded with a two-run home run in the fifth inning to take the lead, 2-1, after
Crystal Guzman hit a long fly ball out of the park to bring herself and
Sonia Schubert around to score.
Green Bay's advantage would prove to be short-lived, as the host Golden Grizzlies scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead and seal the victory.
Oakland outhit Green Bay 11-7, but the Phoenix defense was perfect in the field while OU suffered one error.
Green Bay 7, Oakland 6
A three-run third inning put Oakland in front during game two of the doubleheader, but Green Bay scored a quick four runs in the fourth inning to take the lead.
The Phoenix tallied its first runs of the game after
Morgan Bihun hit a two-run homer to cut the deficit to one run. Isabell Curtin was the next to touch home for GB after
Samantha Soley doubled to left-center.
Soley eventually scored as well on a
Greta Thompson single up the middle, taking a 4-3 lead over Oakland.
The back-and-forth action continued in the bottom of the inning, as OU scored two additional runs to jump back out in front at 5-4.
Green Bay took the lead at 7-5 in the sixth after plating three runs and never looked back.
Aubrey Drohner knocked
Marjorie Sloan in with a single up the middle and two additional runs scored on a deep fly ball to center field from
Jenna Smarzinski.
Oakland scored one run in the sixth but was held scoreless in the seventh as the Phoenix picked up a 7-6 win in the final game of the season.
Green Bay will take a break from Horizon League play for a mid-week matchup in Madison, as the Phoenix take on Wisconsin on Tuesday with a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
