DENMARK, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The Green Bay softball team picked up a pair of crucial victories in its series-opening doubleheader with IUPUI at Circle Tap on Tuesday afternoon. The Phoenix earned a convincing 7-1 win in game one before a 14-13 victory in walk-off fashion.
Green Bay 7, IUPUI 1
The first three frames of the day were scoreless for both teams, with the first run being plated by the visiting Jaguars in the fourth inning.
Green Bay was being no-hit as it headed to the plate in the fifth inning, but the no-hitter was quickly spoiled with one swing of the bat from
Morgan Bihun who hit a home run to left field to tie the game at 1-1 as the Phoenix continued its at-bats.
GB plated an additional three runs in the fifth inning after an RBI double from
Samantha Soley and a two-run home run from
Crystal Guzman to grant the Phoenix a 4-1 advantage.
Green Bay added three insurance runs in the sixth inning to seal a 7-1 win and take down the Jaguars to start the day. GB outhit IUPUI 8-6 while both teams suffered a pair of defensive miscues in game one.
Green Bay 14, IUPUI 13
The second game of the day was nothing like the first, as the Jaguars saw five runs touch home plate in the opening inning. Green Bay responded with a trio of scores in the bottom of the frame to lower IUPUI's advantage to two runs.
After back-and-forth action in the next five innings, the teams headed into the seventh tied 11-11. IUPUI seemed bound for victory in the final inning after plating two runs to lead the Phoenix 13-11 as GB readied for its final at-bats.
A sacrifice fly from
Alyssa Brewer brought
Emily Madeiros home to make it a one-run game before a single to left-center field from Soley tied the game at 13-all.
The next at-bat belonged to
Tiffany Giese, and it proved to be the final of the game as Giese sent a fly ball down the left field line which landed safely and allowed
Isabella Curtin to score from third and give Green Bay the walk-off victory, 14-13.
Green Bay finished with season highs in runs scored (14), at-bats (37), hits (19) and RBIs (14).
The Phoenix will close out the series tomorrow against IUPUI at Circle Tap at 2 p.m.
