GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay women's soccer team defeated Valparaiso on the road to open the 2019 campaign on Friday evening, courtesy a goal early in the second half from newcomer Caitlin Hawley.

Head coach Jason Spain earned his first victory with the Phoenix in impressive fashion, downing former-league-foe Valparaiso to snap a 13-game unbeaten streak held by the Crusaders over GB.

Hawley's goal came in the 49th minute of action after a teammate Ellie Vasey found her on the right side, tight with the net to beat the keeper.

The two squads totaled 18 shots on the evening with nine apiece, but the Phoenix separated itself with shots on goal and corners, holding advantages of 5-3 and 6-2, respectively.

Goalkeepers Courtney Klatt and Claudia Janese split work defending the net, with Klatt taking the honors to open the game and Janese locking it down in the closing half to secure the clean sheet.

The Phoenix attack came from all angles in the season opener, as five members of the squad tallied shot attempts in the pairing. In addition to Hawley, Jordyn Cook and Alexa Bentley notched on-goal attempts for GB.

The Phoenix will now shift its focus to Chicago State as the team readies for its pairing with the Cougars on Sunday in the Windy City.
