GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) ---The Green Bay Phoenix volleyball team defeated the Loyola Ramblers, 3-1, (25-17, 17-25, 25-18, 25-21) on Saturday afternoon at the Kress Center in an exhibition match.

The Phoenix took the fight to the Ramblers with 189 total attacks compared to Loyola's 146. Green Bay was led offensively by junior outside hitter Taylor Wolf, who had 21 kills, followed by junior middle blocker Ashely Sledge, with 10 kills. Senior setter Maddie Yoss started right where she left off 2018 by contributing 47 of the 59 assist during the match and adding 5 kills and 7 digs of her own.
Set one (25-17) saw the Phoenix pull away midgame. Green Bay's hitting percentage of .216 compared to Loyola's .138 was the difference in the set.
Set two (17-25) went the way of Loyola who led the majority of the set. Even though the Phoenix led in attacking attempts (39) compared to that of the Ramblers (32), 7 attacking errors and a hitting percentage of .051 stifled Green Bay.
Set three (25-18) set the tone for the rest of the match. The Phoenix jumped out to an early lead and never trailed during the third set. Green Bay's attack was stellar with a hitting percentage of .361.
Set four (25-21) had the Phoenix carry the momentum from the third set and take home the victory. Green Bay's 17 kills opposed to Loyola's 8 propelled the Phoenix to the win.
Defensively, the Phoenix were solid all day as well. Freshman libero Brenna Hesse collected 23 digs, while both Emily Lautenschlager and Taylor Wolf each collected 9 as well. Up at the net, Ashley Sledge led the Phoenix in total blocks with 4, while junior Kristen Paulus chipped in with 3 of her own.
Green Bay and Loyola agreed to play a fifth set during the exhibition that saw the Ramblers defeat the Phoenix by a score of (15-8).
Next Game
The Phoenix will host the GBD Invite next weekend with two games slated for Friday August 30th. Green Bay will host Northeastern at 11:00 a.m. and Ohio at 7:00 p.m. CT at the Kress Center to begin their 2019 season.
