Andre Baires used some late-game heroics to earn the draw for his team.
Baires scored on a free kick from 20 yards out in the 89th minute, forcing consecutive overtime periods and eventually the draw, 1-1.
Green Bay owned advantages in nearly every statistical category on the evening, amassing 18 shots and placing nine on the Crusader's goal while Valpo tallied only 15 with five on the mark. GB also held a slight edge in corner kicks at 5-2.
Clay Brown notched four shots in the match and placed three on target to lead the Phoenix in both targets.
Jamison Yoder protected the Phoenix net in the season opener for all 110 minutes of regulation and overtime, snagging four saves in the process.
One of the highlights of the evening was the halftime ceremony where the historic 2009 was presented with championship rings to honor their Horizon League Tournament victory and appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Green Bay returns to the pitch on Sunday to face Western Illinois at Aldo Santaga Stadium with kickoff slated for 12 p.m.
