GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- A trio of newcomers found the back of the net for the first time in their respective careers in Green Bay's 3-1 victory over Western Illinois on Sunday afternoon at Aldo Santaga Stadium, as
Fredi Ortega,
Aidan Bates and
Marcus Del Vecchio all found mesh.
Â
The first to strike for the Phoenix was Ortega, who corralled a loose ball and after one touch fired to the right of the keeper to grant GB a 1-0 lead in the 55
th minute.
Â
Green Bay struck again moments later, after
Lucian Lang swiped the ball from the Leathernecks and played it to Bates who was able to fake out the keeper and finish left.
Â
The scoring barrage continued into the 71
st minute when Del Vecchio retrieved the ball after
Robleh Omar's attempt was saved by the keeper and fired it back into the net. Western Illinois was able to score in the following minute after a header in the crossbar and deflected in, but the Phoenix held the Leathernecks scoreless from there to secure the 3-1 victory.
