GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) ---The Green Bay Volleyball team opened up their 2019 season with a win this morning against Northeastern. The Phoenix defeated the Huskies, 3-1, (25-16, 26-28, 27-25, 25-23).
Green Bay 3, Northeastern 1
The first game of the GBD Invite didn't disappoint between the Phoenix and the Huskies. Even though Northeastern led the match in attacks (140) compared to Green Bay (135), the Phoenix were plus ten in kills (52) as opposed to the Huskies (42). Junior
Taylor Wolf and Sophomore
Shannon Coughlin led the way for Green Bay offensively, each recording 14 and 11 kills. Junior
Ashley Sledge wasn't far behind as she walked away from the match with a double-double, contributing 10 kills and 10 block-assist. Senior
Maddie Yoss finished up with a double-double herself, adding 41 assist and 12 digs for the Phoenix. During the first set of the match, Yoss's ninth assist of the set moved her up to second place all-time in the program's history for career assist. She now totals 3,881 assist for her career.

Set one (25-16) had the Phoenix dominate from start to finish.Â
Shannon Coughlin led Green Bay with 5 kills, followed by Taylor with 4. As a team, the Phoenix had a total of 14 kills during the set and a hitting percentage of .545

Set two (26-28) saw the Huskies take an early 7-1 lead, but the Phoenix clawed their way back into the set. Green bay went on two 4 point runs to even things back up, but a few too many errors contributed to Northeastern taking the set.

Set three (27-25) was another tight one between the Phoenix and Huskies. Green bay led midway through at 14-9, but Northeastern slowly closed the gap. Nonetheless, the Phoenix were able to hold on and take the third set. A kill by
Taylor Wolf and a block from Wolf and
Anna Eaton wrapped up the set for Green Bay.

Set four (25-23) went back-and-forth between the two teams but Green Bay never trailed. The Phoenix went on a 6-1 run to take an 18-12 lead and never looked back to win their first game of the season.

The Green Bay defense was strong all match as well. Freshman libero
Brenna Hesse led the Phoenix in digs with 14 and senior defensive specialist
Emily Lautenschlager added 11. As a team, Green Bay had a total of 14 blocks to go alongside their 55 digs.

The Phoenix take on Ohio tonight (August 30
th) at 7:00 p.m. CT in their second game of the GBD Invite.
