Green Bay Set to Begin Horizon League Play this Weekend

9/19/2019 9:17:00 AM

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- The Green Bay women's soccer team will look to continue their current three-game winning streak this weekend as the team opens Horizon League play with Cleveland State at home.

Game Information: Friday vs. Cleveland State – 7 p.m. // Streamed on ESPN3

Most Recently for the Phoenix: Over the weekend, Green Bay was victorious in all three of its games and outscored opponents 17-1 to end nonconference play. The Phoenix opened the weekend with a season-high five goals at Arkansas Pine Bluff. Alyssa Barnes, Sage Nelson, Ellie Vasey, Grace Taylor, and Dani Hajdukiewicz were the five players who found the back of the net.

In game number two of the weekend, Green Bay kept a clean sheet for the fourth time in the 2019 season and allowed no shots on goal for the second time. Grace Taylor added to her goal total twice against Mississippi Valley State, Caitlin Hawley also netted a goal, and Mia Spain scored a goal for the first time in her Green Bay career.

In the final game of the weekend, it was all Phoenix as the team in green accumulated 37 shots and placed 25 of those on goal, all while holding Alcorn State to 1. Morgan Myers, Morgan Courier, Ellie Vasey, McKayla Kertscher, Mia Spain, Jordan Cook, and Caitlin Hawley all found pay dirt in the contest. The seven assists for Green Bay tied the program record for most in a game and eight goals are tied for second most in Phoenix women's soccer history.

Scouting the Vikings: Cleveland State will enter the contest with Green Bay with a 2-4-2 record. The Phoenix will look to turn the tide against the Vikings, as they are currently on a six-game losing streak against the in-conference opponent and have not won since 2011. Green Bay match up well with Cleveland State, as the Vikings have struggled to find mesh and the Phoenix have done well defensively.
