GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com)--- The Green Bay volleyball team began the Hyatt Regency Marquette Invitational with a loss against #8 Marquette (19-25, 23-25, 18-25).
Green Bay 0, Marquette 3
Despite playing against another top-10 opponent on the season, the Phoenix weren't rattled and never lost their composure during the match. The Golden Eagles were just too strong on the offensive-side of the net, claiming 19 more attack-attempts and earning 13 more kills off of those.Â
Taylor Wolf led the way for the squad offensively, recording 15 kills while hitting a solid .367 percentage. In her first career-start, sophomore
Alexis Dorner added 5 kills. Freshman
Zoi Sherolli contributed 5 kills as well. Senior
Maddie Yoss claimed 28 of the 34 assist and added two aces.
Set one (19-25) was a close one between Green Bay and Marquette. The Phoenix led late in the set at 18-15, but the Golden Eagles rallied to claim the set. Defensively, the team was up for the challenge and claimed 8 block-assist and 22 digs. Despite neither team clicking offensively, Marquette tallied 4 more kills and claimed one less error than Green Bay, which were the difference.Â
Ashley Sledge and
Taylor Wolf led for the Phoenix offensively, contributing 4 and 3 kills a-piece.
Set two (23-25) yet again was a tight one between Green Bay and Marquette. The Golden Eagles started out hot and took the early lead. However, the Phoenix went on a 4-0 run midway through to knot thing up at 15-15, and even took the 16-15 lead off a kill from
Zoi Sherolli. Marquette then went on a small run of their own, but Green Bay once again tied the set at 22-22. Unfortunately, the Golden Eagles offense was too much, with them owning a .366 hitting percentage, which propelled them to take the second set.Â
Taylor Wolf led the way offensively for the squad, recording 6 kills.Â
Brenna Hesse had herself a strong second set for the Phoenix as well, claiming 7 digs.
Set three (18-25) saw Marquette claim set and the match. Green Bay went on a 4-0 early to even up the set at 6-6. The teams went back-and-forth till 10-10, but the #8 ranked team took the lead and never looked back.
Green Bay defensively was led by freshman libero
Brenna Hesse who had 19 digs on the night.Â
