GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) ---The Green Bay volleyball team (9-5, 1-1 HL) suffered their first conference loss of the season today against Milwaukee (13-25, 21-25, 26-28).
Green Bay 0, Milwaukee 3
The Phoenix improved each set against the Panthers, which was a positive sign to see, but Milwaukee was a bit sharper on both sides of the net on the day. The Panthers were plus-10 in both kills and digs, and committed four less errors. Neither team was impressive offensively, with Green Bay owning a .096 hitting percentage, while Milwaukee retained a .199 for the match.
Junior
Taylor Wolf earned herself another double-double on the season, contributing 15 kills and 12 digs, while also adding 3 blocks for the Phoenix. Additionally, senior
Maddie Yoss tallied a double-double for the squad as well, logging 31 assist and a season-high 16 digs. Junior
Ashley Sledge followed Wolf in adding double-digits kills with 10, and sophomore
Alexis Dorner ended the match with 6 of her own. In total, six different members contributed kills on the afternoon.
Defensively, freshman libero
Brenna Hesse led the team in digs with 22, which is career-high for her in a three set match. Junior
Anna Eaton and
Ashley Sledge each contributed 4 block-assist, while freshman
Zoi Sherolli and
Alexis Dorner each had 3. As a team, the Phoenix logged 62 digs for the match and 7 total-blocks.
Set one (13-25) saw the visitors take the set convincingly. The Panthers seized their opportunities offensively, owning a .282 hitting percentage compared to the Phoenix's .087. Additionally, Green Bay had 3 more attacking-errors and service errors, which aided to Milwaukee winning the first set.
Set two (21-25) saw the Phoenix go on a rally late, but couldn't overcome the deficit. Green Bay was down 11-4, but slowly erased Milwaukee's lead. The team was trailing 21-18 when back-to-back kills from
Taylor Wolf and
Zoi Sherolli saw the Panthers lead shrink to one. Unfortunately, Milwaukee closed the set on a 4-1 run to take the second set.
Set three (26-28) had the Panthers claim the set and the match. From an efficiency standpoint, the Phoenix's .184 hitting percentage was better than the visitor's .164. Unfortunately, Milwaukee's 18 kills in the set beat out Green Bay's 15. This final set saw the score tied six different times and lead change twice, but the Phoenix couldn't quite get over the hump.
Next Game
Green Bay will be on the road next weekend with matches slated against Oakland and Cleveland State.
