Green Bay Concedes First Loss Against #10 Pitt

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com)--- The Green Bay volleyball team conceded their first loss of the 2019 campaign against #10 nationally-ranked Pittsburgh early this afternoon (17-25, 15-25, 18-25).

#10 Pittsburgh 3, Green Bay 0
Green Bay had their hands full against national powerhouse Pittsburgh.  The Phoenix held strong throughout the match but couldn't quite get over the hump.  Senior leader Maddie Yoss was the steady hand for Green Bay, adding her mark in plenty of statistical categories.  She logged 23 assist, 9 digs, 4 kills, and 2 block-assist.  Juniors Taylor Wolf and Kristen Paulus led the team in kills with 7 each, while junior Ashley Sledge added 6 as well.  Paulus and Sledge both hit quite well against the Panthers, recording hitting percentages of .300 and .333 respectively.

Set one (17-25) went the way of the Panthers.  Green Bay started to find their groove as the set wore on and even went on a run late, but the high-powered Pittsburgh offense was too much.  The Panthers hit at an impressive rate of .333 and had 16 kills.  Despite Pittsburgh looking sharp, Maddie Yoss did a little bit of everything for the Phoenix in the set, recording 9 assist, 3 digs, and a kill.

Set two (15-25) had Pittsburgh take the second set.  The Phoenix hung with the Panthers during the entire set, however, too many self-inflicted wounds hurt Green Bay.  The squad committed 7 attack-errors and a pair of service-errors which stifled their chances.  The bright spots for the Phoenix were Kristen Paulus and sophomore Shannon Coughlin who each registered 3 kills in the set.

Set three (18-25) saw the Panthers take the set and the match.  Once again, Green Bay fought hard with Pittsburgh, but the Panthers were just a little bit sharper.  Pittsburgh only hit .206 during the set, but converted 6 more kills than Green Bay, which was the difference maker.

Defensively, the squad were led in digs by freshman libero Brenna Hesse and Taylor Wolf, who each had 10 a piece.  Defensive specialists Emily Lautenschlager and Micaela Kent each tallied 5 digs also.  The Phoenix recorded 7 total-blocks as a team, with Ashley Sledge leading the team with 4 block-assist.  Junior Anna Eaton and Shannon Coughlin each contributed 3 additionally.
