GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- Green Bay honored its alumni on Saturday afternoon at the Kress Center with a halftime recognition and dominant performance on the court. The Phoenix defeated UIC, 73-36, behind a smothering performance from its defense.
The Green Bay offense ignited early on Saturday afternoon, sparked by back-to-back baskets from
Meghan Pingel to take a 7-6 lead over the Flames. From there, the Phoenix continued to build on its advantage and ended the period on a 12-4 run, including scoring the final seven points of the quarter.
Both teams shot 5-for-12 in the opening frame, but two triples and a 7-of-8 performance at the charity stripe proved to be a difference maker in Green Bay 19-10 advantage.
After buckets from
Caitlyn Hibner and
Madison Wolf to open the second quarter, the Phoenix weathered a two-minute scoring drought with seemingly no deconstruction of its early lead. The Phoenix defense was ubiquitous, allowing the Flames only three free throws through the first 6:37 of the second.
Green Bay doubled UIC's point total at halftime, outscoring the Flames 34-17. The Phoenix continued its dominance in the second half, opening with an 8-0 run behind two triples and a layup from Hibner.
Despite struggling from long range in the first half, the Phoenix continued to fire away from beyond the arc. The efforts appeared to pay off as Green Bay finished the third 5-of-7 from deep with two triples apiece from Hibner, Oskey and another from Patricia Gallasova.
Green Bay ended the quarter by tripling UIC offensive production at 27-9 and carried a 61-26 lead into the final frame.
The Phoenix would again outscore the Flames in the final frame to complete a 73-36 victory and move to 4-3 in Horizon League play. Hibner led all scorers with 14 points and was joined in double figures by Oskey and Gallasova.
Gallasova's 10 points mark a new career-high for the redshirt freshman, who reached the total behind a 4-of-7 clip from the field in 21 minutes.
Green Bay now prepares for a five-game road trip, with its first weekend swing taking the team to Ohio for matchups with Youngstown State and Cleveland State. The Phoenix takes the court at YSU next Friday at 6 p.m. followed by a pairing with the Vikings at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
