BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) — The Green Bay softball team opened its action in the WKU Hilltopper Classic on Friday afternoon, taking the diamond in a morning matchup with Ball State before concluding the day with the host Western Kentucky.
The Phoenix fell to the Cardinals, 8-0, before dropping a nail-biter to the Hilltoppers, 7-6.
Ball State 8, Green Bay 0 (5 innings)
Ball State had one run cross the plate in the first inning, but the real difference maker came in the fourth inning when the Cardinals erupted for four runs.
Two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth enforced the run-rule for the Cardinals and secured an 8-0 victory to open the tournament.
Green Bay tallied three hits in the game, with Tiffany Giese, Kalyssa Koehn and Greta Thompson all getting base knocks.
Western Kentucky 7, Green Bay 6
The final game of the day came right down to the wire with the teams exchanging the lead throughout the matchup.
First on the board was Green Bay, who plated two runs in the second inning on a two-run home run from Morgan Bihun which also brought Alyssa Brewer around to score.
Western Kentucky took its first lead of the game with a four-run third inning and added two runs in the fifth to lead the Phoenix 6-2.
Green Bay offense began heating up in the sixth inning and a couple walks and a single from Brewer, the bases were loaded for Bihun.
Bihun worked to a full count and eventually drew a walk which scored Bailey Schultz and once again loaded the bases for Aubrey Drohner.
To say Drohner delivered in the moment would be an understatement, as the pinch hit situation paid off for Green Bay with a bases-clearing triple down the left field line to tie the game at 6-6.
Unfortunately for GB, the Hilltoppers plated one run in the bottom of the frame and sealed a 7-6 victory for the tournament hosts.
GB returns to the diamond tomorrow for two more games in the classic, with the first pitch of game one against Indiana State slated for 10 a.m.
