Pipes Reaches 1K as Green Bay’s Second-Half Rally Comes Up Short

CLEVELAND, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- A second half rally from the Phoenix came up short at the Wolstein Center on Saturday night, as host Cleveland State was able to hold on for a 73-65 victory. Amari Davis led all scorers in the matchup with 29 points, bringing his weekend total against the Vikings to 56.

PJ Pipes scored 14 points in the matchup and became the 32nd player in program history to reach 1,000 points in their career.

Green Bay started strong and was able to build an 11-5 lead in the early action, but Cleveland State stormed back with an 18-2 run to take a double-digit advantage at 23-13.

The Vikings didn't slow down as the half continued, eventually working to a 41-23 lead at the break.

Green Bay showed no quit as the teams returned to the floor in the second half, chipping away at the CSU lead with timely runs.

Within the first six minutes, a hustle play from Josh Jefferson which saw the senior guard chase down a loose ball and finish with a reverse layup lowered GB's deficit to eight, 44-36.

Jefferson again answered the call with a timely 3-pointer at the 7:25 mark which brought Green Bay within six points, 53-47. Moments later Japannah Kellogg III finished at the rim to bring GB with three, 56-53, but eight-straight point from CSU pushed its advantage back to double digits.

A layup from Davis which supplied two of his game-high 29 points for Green Bay made it a six-point game, but the Phoenix was unable to pull any closer from there. The Vikings held off GB down the stretch to secure a 73-65 win.

Davis' 29-point outing surpassed yesterday's total of 27 and marked the seventh time this season the sophomore scored at least 20 points and the 14th of his career.

Cleveland State was led by a trio of 16-point scorers on the evening.

Up next for the Phoenix is a four-game homestand, beginning with two games against IUPUI at the Kress Center next weekend. Both games will be streamed live on ESPN3 with tip-off slated for 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
