GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The Green Bay women's soccer team is headed to the Horizon League semifinals in Milwaukee, Wis. after an emphatic 4-0 win over No. 5 Cleveland State Sunday afternoon. The win is the first Horizon League postseason win for GB since the 2014 season when they beat Youngstown State 3-1 in the quarterfinals. The Phoenix will square off against top-seeded Milwaukee at Engelmann Stadium on Thursday at 1 p.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Green Bay started the scoring in the ninth minute when Emily Murphy chased down a loose ball behind the Cleveland State defense, and slotted it past the Viking keeper.
The Phoenix doubled their lead on a goal from McKayla Kertscher -- her sixth goal of the season -- in the 34th minute. Madeline Cruz found Kertscher's head off of a corner kick and the midfielder capitalized
Green Bay went up 3-0 on a long-range free kick from Murphy, her fourth goal of the season.
The Phoenix capped their huge day with a 78th minute goal from Hannah Bennett, her first career goal. Kertscher drove the ball from the midfield into the Cleveland State box, and laid it off to Bennett who finished far post.
