Green Bay Suffers Setback to SMU at South Point Shootout

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - It was a cold shooting day for the Green Bay women's basketball team Saturday afternoon. The Phoenix shot 28.3-percent from the floor en route to a 53-43 defeat to SMU at South Point Arena.

The Phoenix (3-3) had two players score in double figures, led by Maddy Schreiber, who had 10 points. Jasmine Kondrakiewicz added 10 points off the bench, and Julia Hartwig totaled four points and two steals.

Green Bay's defense held SMU to only 34.7 percent shooting from the field, and limited Savannah Wilkinson to just 3-of-12 shooting and 10 points in the game. The Mustangs did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass, as they finished with seven offensive rebounds and managed four second chance points while Green Bay cleared 27 defensive rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Green Bay fell behind 16-8 at the end of the first quarter after shooting 2-of-14 from the field.

SMU kept adding to their lead, building a 26-13 advantage. Green Bay responded with a 5-0 run, highlighted by back-to-back buckets from Schreiber, to narrow its deficit to 26-18. SMU stopped the run shortly after, and led the Phoenix 29-20 heading into halftime.

Green Bay and SMU both put up nine points in the third quarter, keeping the deficit even at 38-29 entering the fourth. Green Bay took advantage of four SMU turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of takeaways.

Green Bay could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 53-43. GB took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 14 points in the paint.
