GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The Green Bay men's basketball team's home opener came down to the wire Tuesday night, as the Phoenix fell to Indiana State 81-77.
The Phoenix (0-1) had four players score in double figures, led by Emmanuel Ansong, who filled up the stat sheet with 19 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Donovan Ivory added 16 points and six rebounds off of the bench and Kamari McGee chipped in as well with 14 points from the bench.
The Green Bay offense was productive from deep, making nine threes on 27 attempts. Ansong was the most prolific shooter for the Phoenix, draining three treys in the contest.
The Green Bay defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Tuesday's game, forcing 16 Indiana State turnovers while only committing nine themselves. Those takeaways turned into 24 points on the other end of the floor. Ansong's three steals led the way individually for the Phoenix.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After jumping out to a 23-19 advantage, Green Bay went on an 8-0 run with 9:04 left in the first half to increase its lead to 31-19. The Phoenix then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 43-38 advantage. Green Bay relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down seven shots to account for 21 of its 43 points.
Green Bay kept its lead intact before going on a 10-0 run, finished off by McGee's three, to grow the lead to 59-47 with 13:07 to go in the contest. Indiana State then asserted control, outscoring the Phoenix 34-18 the rest of the way to hand Green Bay the 81-77 loss.
