Phoenix Comes Up Short at Kansas City

Kamari McGee Scored a Career-High 19 Points

KANSAS CITY, Mo. --The Green Bay men's basketball team fell 64-55 to the Kansas City Kangaroos on the road Friday. 

Kamari McGee led the Phoenix (2-7) with 19 points and two steals. Japannah Kellogg III added nine points and seven rebounds and Donoovan Ivory chipped in as well with seven points and three blocks.

Led by Emmanuel Ansong's two offensive rebounds, Green Bay did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 12 boards that resulted in five second chance points.

Green Bay did a great job disrupting Kansas City shots in the contest, coming away with six blocks. Ivory's three rejections led the way individually for the Phoenix.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Neither team got off to a hot start in the first half, with the two combining to shoot 27.2-percent from the floor. After falling behind 8-4, Green Bay went on a 5-0 run with 12:02 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from McGee, to take a 9-8 lead. The Phoenix then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 22-19.

The Kangaroos widened their lead coming out of the half, resulting in a 64-49 advantage before Green Bay went on a 6-0 run to shrink the deficit to 64-55 with :28 seconds to go in the contest. The Phoenix were unable to cut further into the deficit by the end of the game, losing 64-55. Green Bay took care of business in the paint, recording 22 of its 36 points in the lane.

GAME NOTES

» The Green Bay bench scored 25 of the teams 55 points.
» Green Bay won the rebounding advantage 38-30.
» The Phoenix were active in affecting shots on the defensive end, tallying six blocks as a team.
» Green Bay cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 12 offensive boards in the game.
» 16 of McGee's 19 points came within the last ten minutes of the second half.
» Kellogg's seven rebounds is tied for a season-high.
» GB made just two shots from beyond the arc on the night, their lowest of the season.
» The Phoenix committed 18 turnovers, the highest of the season.

UP NEXT

GB won't have to travel far for their game on Sunday against Kansas State. The Phoenix will enter Bramlage Coliseum for just the third time in school history for a 4 p.m. showdown. The last time the Phoenix were there was November 15, 2009, when they pulled off a overtime win over the Wildcats, 87-86.
